Frequently asked questions.

We know starting therapy can come with a lot of questions. Here are some of the most common ones we hear. If you don’t see your question here, feel free to reach out—we’re happy to help.

What is therapy, and how do I know if it’s right for me?

Therapy is a space to explore your thoughts, emotions, and experiences with the support of a trained professional. You don’t have to be in crisis to benefit—many people come to therapy when they feel stuck, overwhelmed, curious about patterns in their life, or just want extra support navigating something hard. If you’re wondering whether therapy could help, that’s a good enough reason to start.

What can I expect during my first session?

Your first session is about getting to know each other. You’ll talk with your therapist about what’s bringing you in, what’s been going on, and what you’re hoping to get out of therapy. There’s no pressure to share everything at once—we’ll move at your pace.

How often will I come to therapy?

How often you come to therapy depends on your goals, availability, and what feels manageable for you. Most clients start with weekly sessions to build momentum and consistency. As progress is made, you and your therapist might decide to meet less frequently. We’ll work together to find a rhythm that supports your growth.

How long does therapy typically last?

The length of therapy looks different for everyone. Some people come for a few months to work through a specific issue, while others may choose to stay in therapy longer for deeper personal growth. We’ll regularly check in on your goals and progress so you can decide what feels right for you.

How do I choose the right therapist for me?

Finding the right fit matters. We recommend reading through our team bios to see who might feel like a good match. You can also let us know a bit about what you’re looking for on the contact form, and we’ll help pair you with a therapist whose style and expertise align with your needs.

Do you take insurance? Which plans do you accept?

Yes, we accept several major insurance plans including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS), Blue Care Network (BCN), Priority Health, and United Healthcare. You can find a full list on each therapist’s profile—or reach out if you’re not sure what your plan covers.

Do you offer virtual therapy?

Yes, many of our therapists offer telehealth sessions via secure video. Let us know if this is your preference when reaching out, and we’ll match you with someone who provides virtual sessions.

Where are you located, and where do I park?

We’re located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. When you schedule an appointment, we’ll send you detailed instructions for parking and how to find our office. We’ll walk you through everything—even the parking lot!

What if I need to cancel or reschedule an appointment?

We understand that life happens. We ask for at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule a session. This allows us to offer that time to another client who may be waiting.

What if I don’t know what to talk about in therapy?

That’s okay. You don’t need to have it all figured out to show up. Your therapist will help guide the conversation and work with you to explore whatever’s coming up—big or small. Sometimes, just showing up is the most important step.

Do you offer LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy?

Yes. Brave is proud to be an LGBTQIA+ affirming practice. Many of our therapists specialize in working with queer, trans, and questioning clients, and we are committed to creating a space that’s safe, inclusive, and supportive of all identities.
